The breeze rustles
gently through the trees, causing the brilliant red and yellow leaves to flutter
down around us.
In the distance, we can hear the call of the loons echoing across the lake.
As I stand with my wife on the land her grandfather bought 45 years ago, I marvel
at the beauty God has created in Northern Ontario. I smile as I watch our two
young daughters scamper through the fallen leaves, and I remember back to where
this journey began…
My wife, Lynn, and I had always agreed a log home was our dream dwelling. We loved everything about the rustic feel, everything about the beauty of wood in its natural state. Our trips up to the cottage often included a stop at the Muskoka store to browse through the incredible log furniture and accessories housed there. We dreamed of a day when our home would have soaring log beams and the feel of a wilderness lodge …a day when our home would create nostalgia in our guests of a bygone era where families would spend the evenings around a big stone fireplace after a day playing in the snow, or hiking in the woods, or swimming in the lake…an escape back to family…
The bears were proving troublesome this particular season,
and a woodsman friend of ours let us know that a big walking stick was an important
tool to have along on our hikes. Arriving at the cottage
in the stunning forest adjacent to Algonquin Park, we found suitable size walking
sticks for the entire family. I spent afternoons on the dock enjoying the sound
of the crystal blue spring-fed waters lapping upon the shore and sanding my
walking stick into a masterpiece. When I was finished I proudly showed it to
my wife. Lynn was impressed with the beauty I had brought out of the wood, and
suggested that perhaps I could take it one step further and create a rustic
log coat tree for our front hallway at home…bringing home a piece
of
the cottage so we could enjoy it all year long…and so I did!
That began a journey that eventually led to Rob's Rustics…a family owned
and operated business that allows us to experience the joys of using God's creations
to create even more beauty…the beauty of rustic log furniture. Our home
is filled with rustic log furniture; we enjoy the experience of our own piece
of country in the hustle and bustle of the city. Many friends and family have
enjoyed the fruits of this labour as well…imagine our fun when we built
rustic log coat trees for those closest to us as Christmas gifts…and a
beautiful loveseat as a wedding gift for a close friend…Rob's Rustics
make great gifts!
The Story of the Rob's Rustics Coat Tree
It was a warm autumn holiday up at the lake
Perfect for hiking…to the woods we did take
Ever watchful for bears…our concern was not fake!
So for protection and fun, a walking stick we did make!
Rob took an axe, and found the perfect pine
Chopped it down to size…not quite a straight line!
He stripped and he sanded, not one…but did nine…
In the end…walking sticks…that really were fine!
Upon eyeing the results, Lynn said to Rob
"Congratulations my dear, you did quite a nice job…"
"Soon others will see these, creating a mob…"
"We will have to change your name, to a builder named Bob!"
By now it was clear, a great skill was found
Building with wood…right up from the ground
So much to do…the possibilities abound
"Maybe a coat tree" suggests Lynn "on a base that is round"
Thus began the saga of the Rob's Rustics Coat Tree
And made especially for you…how handy it will be
You'll wonder how you lived without it, just wait and see
So enjoy this gift…your handmade Rob's Rustics Coat Tree!
With the word out that Rob was building rustics, requests began coming in…everything
from candle holders to bunk beds to dining room sets…we have done it all!
